Twenty-first birthdays are cause for celebration, and this year's Indy was no exception. Record numbers of spectators, racers, and show cars poured through the gates of Indianapolis Raceway Park in search of great Chevys and exciting races. For those needing hard-to-find parts the swap meet was the biggest on the tour, and the new products in the Manufacturer's Midway were numerous. Chevrolet even gave us a look at a 9-second Cavalier campaigned as an exhibition car, running a 2.2L four-cylinder that cranks out triple-digits per liter! Not to be outdone, two of our Nitro Coupes tangled up their parachutes at the end of a very good race, fortunately damaging only the cars but, unfortunately, leaving both out of the remainder of the weekend's fun.
Someone we didn't get to spend enough time with was Bill Amrine who put together an Editor's Choice Top Ten Show Car '63 Nova convertible for his wife, Sue. Amazingly, the Indianapolis native is legally blind but accomplished most of the work himself. And we think it's tough for us? Way to stick with it, Bill!
Indianapolis Raceway Park is big, well run, and has something for everyone. There's even a great oval track running on Saturday night at which many Super Chevy fans, who hadn't had enough racing, stayed up late. It was sort of like no one wanted the birthday party to end. We don't blame them--it was one to remember.
